Riding Unhooked

This maneuver is known to be one of the most striking kitesurfing moves. Besides it´s not among the most difficult and it allows you to enjoy the kite as much as it gives you a more natural position.

Try it, your friends will be really impressed.

How to do it;

The main requirement is to first navigate hooked.

The best way to learn is to just practice this technique, unhook, back on your edge, then hook straight back in again.

- Trim the kite so that when you´re unhooked it doesn´t `open´.
- Unhook while there is no tension in the lines then get back on you edge, throw your trick(chicken loop)then ride towards the kite again while there is no tension on the lines and hook back in.
- To ride unhooked maintain your kite low otherwise it will be very difficult to ride with your hands above your head.
- If you encounter any possible safety hazards while entering into a chicken loop, disengage or else you´ll have difficulty hooking in again.
- Position your hands closer to the center of the control bar.

Am I doing it correctly;

My kite is not rising while I´m unhooked.
When I attempt to hook, the lines go loose.
The kite bends well.

DON´T EVER

o Do not hang from the bar in order to pass it to another person.
o Do not unhook while the kite is riding high.

If the kite tends to fall and you feel you´re being dragged downwind, just ride straight at the kite. The kite will depower and you can hook right in.
With some kites you´ll need to add some extensions to the stern lines, about 5-10 cm in order to control the break power and even so it´s possible that you´re kite will have too much power.
You can also shorten the brake stride but it will decrease the range or also shorten the windward lines(not recommended if you have a 5th line)
